our Roots
Kwe'! Pjila'si!
The Debert Hospitality Centre is located on the traditional territory of the Mi'kmaw Nation. We are proud as an indigenous business to support the work being done by our people in Mi'kmaw'ki. The land around us is rich in history dating back more than 11, 000 years. We treasure this legacy and it inspires us in our work.
In the early 2000s the Debert Hospitality Centre was the site of a number of meetings that eventually led to the 2008 apology to Residential School Survivors. Since we opened our doors in 2002, numerous ceremonies, healing circles, language courses, workshops, teachings, and celebrations have taken place with us.
Our leadership is a team of Cree, Métis, and Mi'kmaq business owners.
We honour our traditions in the ways we do business. Smudging is permitted anywhere within our building or on the land surrounding us. We have a permanent sweat lodge on site as well as traditional medicines and a drum that can be borrowed. This is just one of the ways in which we support our people.
Wela'lioq! Msit No'kmaq.
